Summary/Abstract: The rebirth of nationalism in modern China is a phenomenon, the scale and rate of which may cause concern. What is the more interesting, is the fact that the very notion of “nation” is strange to the Chinese civilisation and is an effect of translation and adaptation of Western ideas that occurred at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the article, the author quotes works analysing the linguistic sources of the Chinese concept of nation and nationalism. The key to understand the complex processes and phenomena which are described by the modern term of Zhonghua minzu (the Chinese nation) is the issue of translation, which, on many levels, decide about the structure of notions required for the development of national discourse.
