Summary/Abstract: In this paper we are dealing with the identity of Europe and its interdependence with typically European relationship towards the otherness, be it the concrete others, or otherness as such. The European identity springs from the same context from which emerges philosophic-theoretical thinking and that is the reason why for those who embody and represent it, it cannot be accepted and adopted as a contingent giveness, but instead must be reflexively constituted. The principal thesis of this survey is that due to reason’s difficulties to provide its perfect theoretical foundation, the problem in constituting European identity also arises.
