Summary/Abstract: Focusing on the interpretation and translation of modalities (namely, epistemic modalities), the paper presents the main findings of the research undertaken for our doctoral thesis. This paper is part of the body of literature dealing with applied linguistics - more specifically, with the linguistics of utterance - in the field of translation. Following two linguistic approaches, i.e. the construction of utterance modalities based on A. Culioli’s model of “enunciative location” (« repérage énonciatif »), and “paraphrastic reformulation” theory as developed by C. Fuchs respectively, we attempt to pin down the main problems that arise in the interpretation and the translation from French to Romanian of several corpus-based modalized utterances.
