Summary/Abstract: This study applies Agnew’s general strain theory to two fundamental questions about gender and crime: How can we ex lain the higher rate of crime amongmales? How can we explain why females engage in crime? With respect to the firstquestion, the authors suggest that the gender differences in types of strain and the reactionto strain help one understand the gender gap in criminal behavoiur. With respect to thesecond question, it is argued that several types of strain may lead to female crime under theproper circumstances. In this area, general strain theory has much in common withnumerous accounts that explain female crime in terms of oppression.
