Summary/Abstract: Oronyms are a branch of toponymy that serve for denoting the names of elevations from hillocks and hills to mountains. The paper deals with the theoretical definition of oronymy. Out of some sixty oronyms interpreted in the paper most of them are motivated by appellatives. In the oronym Velež mythic elements are reflected. The oronym Kobilovača is of zoonymic origin (kobila = mare). The said interpreted oronyms vividly testify about the centuries-long stormy history of living in the Mostar region. The oronyms Fortica, Petralj and Porim were named after historical events and persons. The oronym Mikuljača inherits the name from St. Nicholas (bishop) whom people even today, for example in Dalmatia, call Mikula. The paper uses the following methods: inductive-deductive, cartographic, and field-investigative one as well as the methods of description, analysis and synthesis. The names of the oronyms contain lexical wealth reflecting Latinisms, Turkisms etc.
