Summary/Abstract: The Czechoslovak National Research Council was an eminent special-purpose scientific institution. It was closely associated with the efforts of Czechoslovak science to be included within the international framework and with emancipation in regard to Czechoslovak scientists of German nationality. The CSNRC was to a large extent conceived as the Republic’s “showcase” to show the world that Czechoslovak science was competitive at an international level. The CSNRC performed its own scientific activities via individual departments and committees, but above all it mediated international contacts for individuals and scientific institutions. Its members were active, enterprising participants in international projects, although only a few lived to see their implementation.
