Summary/Abstract: In this paper the basic premises of the social philosophy of the classical Russian Slavophilism are presented. Apart from the significance of Slavophilism for understanding the Russian intellectual tradition, the author emphasizes the revival of the Slav ophilist heritage in the current discussions on the future of post-communist Russia. Another reason for analyzing Slavophilism is provided by its influence on the Serbian political thought and culture. Starting from an interpretation of the general philosophical and theological background of classical Slavophilism, in the central part of the paper the author analyzes social ideas of the Slavophiles as articulated in their critique of Western European societies and in the formulation of the social ideal of “genuine community” embodied in the Russian past.
