Summary/Abstract: Jarosław Gowin’s article introduces us to the work of the late eminent priest and philosopher Józef Tischner, stressing specially the issues of communism and decommunization. Father Tischner perceived the experience of communism as the key to answer the question what is the nature of evil. That is why the reflections on the communist system were so often present in his works, both in the most prominent ones as „The Controversy over Human Existence” and in the last ones such as „Drogi i bezdroża miłosierdzia” („The Ways and Sideways of Mercy”). Gowin presents the evolution of Tischner’s views on the issue of decommunization. At first he was against it and for this attitude was often criticized by the right wing of the political scene. In the course of time, however, he realized the negative consequences of neglecting the dealing with the communist past. He also understood that his postulates of mercy and forgiveness were treated instrumentally by the post-communists.
