Summary/Abstract: After a brief review of some basic institutional changes o f the ''systemic'' social role of workers in the countries in "post-socialist transition", including Serbia, the author aescribed significant shifts of the work force from "sociar/state firms to private firms in Serbia in the early 1990s. The share of the individuals officially employed in private firms has increased from 2-3% in 1989 to some 15% in 1994. In reality, private firms plaved a much more unportant role in the sphere of employment, partly because a considerable nmnber of those officially working in the "state"/social enterprises were 'moonlighting' in private firms, and partly because a large number of the individuals employed in the "social” sector were sent to the so-called "compulsory vacations" and, actually, rendered inactive. Further, the author has demonstrated that the "economy of transition" in contemporary Serbia is divided along two lines: there is a division between the "social" and private sector, ana a division between the "official” and "hidden economy".
