Summary/Abstract: The article shows, against a wide background of the era, the backstage of establishing a famous duet and the creation of two experimental films by Walerian Borowczyk and Jan Lenica for the Team of Film Authors “Kadr”. These films, i.e. “Once Upon a Time…” (1957) and “Home” (1958), realized outside the then system of production of cartoon and puppet films, are considered a symbolic beginning of the so-called Polish animation school. They also turned out to be a pass for both authors to international careers. Based on new documents, Sitkiewicz reconstructs the artistic program of Lenica and Borowczyk, who in 1957 wrote down their artistic manifesto. He also tries to explain why both short films were made in a team involved in the production of full-length acting movies, why they were welcomed as a breakthrough in the field of animated cinema and what were the consequences of the duo’s success at the festival. In addition the author shows behind-the-scenes work on an unrealized medium-length film project – the adaptation of Kafka’s “Penal Colony”.
