Summary/Abstract: The unplanned and unregulated construction of peripheral zones resulted in the formation of agglomerations around towns in Serbia. This paper analyses different lifestyles in these peripheral zones, and concentrates predominantly on the arrangement and construction of them. On the basis of the proposed criteria for assessing the quality of life in terms of the organisation, arrangement and construction of these zones, the paper also compares the lifestyles with those in central town districts and rural settlements, from which the population now living on the town periphery emigrated. The conclusions indicate that the quality of life in peripheral town zones is much better than in rural settlements in hilly and mountainous regions, but less favourable than in central town districts. The paper also presents a typology of settlements in peripheral town zones based on spatial arrangement and construction, and points to activities conducive to improving the quality of life in them.
