Summary/Abstract: The article, »The Allies and the Liberation of Serbia in 1944« explains the complex and intertwined relations between the Allies and the various domestic military and political factors. From the summer of 1943, Serbia became a central point of interest for all parties involved, Nazi Germany, the National Liberation Movement as well as for the Quislings and the Chetniks. While Germany strove to keep Serbia under occupation as long as possible, the National Liberation Movement did everything to liberate it. In 1944 the contending interests of powerful allies, the USSR and Great Britain, began to surface in Serbia. Initially the British influence, supported by military aid, was stronger but towards the end of the war the Soviet influence became dominant. The question of Serbia was settled much faster than the allies had expected. Serbia was liberated in the autumn of 1944 by the combined efforts of the National Liberation Movement and the Red Army, with some help from the Bulgarian army. By the time the liberation came, Serbia had already slipped under the temporary and illusive British influence to fall into the firm grip of the Soviet Union.
