Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problems of children’s literature and therefore creatingnational identity. The basis of the analysis is a collection of fairytales Priče and davnineby Croatian writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, which was published in 1916. These stories createdduring the formation of national consciousness, significantly influenced the buildingof the national identity of southern Slavs. The author, realizing the importance of the bookon the child’s development, took up topics, which were then (and they seem to be still)an important element of education. The text deals with the specific aspects, that movedwriter in such a special time of the formation of the Slavic nations, trying to influencethe younger generation, that could create a better society.
