Summary/Abstract: Taking the immense popularity of ghostwritten celebrity autobiographies as a starting point, Antonik demonstrates that the values represented by autobiography, such as difference and identity, correspond to the basic values of the market in late capitalism. This explains why the genre occupies a central place in the economy of attention and celebrity culture. Antonik portrays autobiography as a multifunctional tool that allows celebrities to commodify their personality, to multiply their attention capital, and to negotiate their cultural identity. Having examined autobiography from a broader perspective Antonik concludes that in terms of the genre’s functioning in the cultural industry today it is irrelevant whether or not the text was produced by a ghostwriter.
