Summary/Abstract: Romanowski examines selected works by writer and scenarist Joanna Olczak-Ronikier (born 1934), in relation to the question of Polish-Jewish identity. Olczak-Ronikier’s later works such as W ogrodzie pamięci [In The Garden of Memory: A Family Memoir] and Korczak: Próba biografii [Korczak: An Attempted Biography] were written when Jewish experiences could finally be expressed freely, and they were produced with the intention of telling a story that women writers born earlier had not been able to tell. These works present an identity model for the Polish Jew – a model that combines the open cultivation of Jewish cultural memory and tradition with the traditions of the Polish intelligentsia. Drawing on Roland Barthes’ notion of the biographical punctum, a place where the history of the protagonist’s life touches on the biographer’s own experiences, moreover, Romanowski problematises the relationship between the biographer and the protagonist as presented by Olczak-Ronikier.
