Summary/Abstract: Rev. Piotr Skarga’s nine sermons from the collections Kazania o siedmi sakramentach [Sermons on the Seven Sacraments] and Kazania przygodne [Sermons on Various Occasions] are intended for weddings, the first mass of newly ordained priests, deaths, funerals, victory in war. Analysing the persuasive strategies in these texts, the author examines the genre status of the old Polish sermons. He proposes that it is not enough to point out the inventive sources to talk about the texts’ mutual dependencies. Instead he suggests that dispositio and elocutio are equally important and concludes by outlining previous attempts to classify the sermons in terms of genre.
