Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present family businesses as an important element of the economy. The topic related to this type of entities is becoming more and more important – their significant share in generating GDP, creating jobs or implementing entrepreneurial functions has been noticed. This article constitutes a theoretical description of functioning of family enterprises. On the basis of Polish and foreign literature, an assessment of the impact of such entities on the Polish economy was made, the condition of family enterprises in the assessment of their owners was described, while a separate place was devoted to the problems of family businesses in Spain.
