Summary/Abstract: Partner violence, or violence that occurs in intimate and partner relationships, is a violence committed by a current or former partner, regardless of whether it is a partner with whom a person is in formal or informal marriage and regardless of whether he or she or live in the same household. Although the typical social understanding of intimate partner violence focuses on a man as an accomplice and a woman as a victim, intimate partner violence can have multiple forms, including violence in same-sex relationships and violence in which a woman is a perpetrator and a victim is a man. Also, intimate partner violence encompasses all forms of intimate relationships including entertainment, life together, marriage, separation and divorced couples. Particular attention should be paid to violence committed by former partners because in many cases the termination of the relationship does not stop the only violence. In this paper, the characteristics of violence committed by men over women in intimate partner relationships are analyzed, given that this is by far the most common form of violence, without diminishing the danger and harmful effects of other forms of partner violence.
