Summary/Abstract: In the last ten years, a new storm of ethnocentric extremism conquered France by the spectacular growth of the National Front – FN -, the obvious radicalization of the new social layers and the installation of a general climate of exclusivism and intolerance. How was this possible and which are the factors that contributed to this? Which are the reasons of the Frenchmen who vote the FN? What anti-extremist techniques were used and why did they fail? But more important, which are the perspectives for the 21st Century and what should be done in order to avoid a dramatic evolution? The first point of this study is to prove that the new wave of extremism is that of the modern society, different from the historical one and, at the same time, a sophisticated synthesis of all the traditional movements who raised against the democratic states. The second point is to show that fight against the FN was inconsistent and incoherent and that only profound changes in the approach of realities by politicians and the full commitment of the civil society are able to reduce the effects of the crisis and, thus, the source of extremism.
