Summary/Abstract: This paper outlines the genesis and development of Serbian sociology in the 20th century. The first institutional center of sociology in Serbia was the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. In the period between the two World Wars, sociology was especially needed by lawyers, who were searching ways to establish a modern legal system in the new Yugoslav state, which was burdened with many structural and developmental problems such as: (1) form of state government and political relations among the South Slavs, (2) class and regional inequalities, (3) delayed and uneven modernization of underdeveloped peasant society.
