Summary/Abstract: During the 19th century it was Valtazar Bogišić who has accomplished some pioneering work in the field of legal sociology. This was to some extent openly acknowledged by Eugen Ehrlich in his Principles of the Sociology of Law. The study brings an overview of the academic and intellectual development of Bogišić’s thought (1834–1908). Initially a child of European Romantic era, who had preferred to point out Hegel’s ideas with some distinguished lines from the German poetry, in his mature studies Bogišić has turned to an enemy of speculation and generalization.
