Summary/Abstract: The text treats Herbert Spenser's contribution to the development of comparative researchs in sociology. The author endeavours to point to the interdependence of various philosophical, theoretical, methodological and individual factors in the genesis of Spenser’s thought. In the first sectin of the paper the author indicates the growth of Spenser’s sociological ideas, in the second part the manner of his use of comparativ method is demonstrated.
