Summary/Abstract: The goal of this paper is to observe the early anthropological debates on the question whether anthropology is a “historical” or “scientific” discipline, through the combined lens of history of anthropological ideas and methods and anthropology of anthropology. The author examines the work of Franz Boas, as she considers it as a convenient platform for highliting certain methodological problems that anthropology shares with other social sciences and humanities. This platform also anticipates a large number of more recent debates on the question of explanation in anthropology and illuminates the close connections of scientific and extra-scientific (sociopolitical and ethical) backbones, goals and implications of anthropological research.
