Summary/Abstract: The present study investigates the metalinguistic awareness of speakers of the Central Transdanubian dialect region in Hungary. The paper analyses the data of 21 participants in 3 research points of the New General Atlas of Hungarian Dialects project from 2008. The project was funded by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2007 and 2012 and repeated a part of the dialect questionnaire of the first atlas of Hungarian dialects that was based on data from 1949–1964. As a novum of the new project a sociolinguistic questionnaire was also given to the participants. The main purpose of this study is to analyse the answers to many of these new questions that inform us about the usage of the respondents’ own dialect, about language attitudes to their own and to other Hungarian dialects and about the language awareness of the examined speech community. The results are also compared to the answers of other speakers of the same dialect region by using the data of the author’s similar case study.
