Summary/Abstract: This article describes the institution used by an Indian caste in the disputes process between caste members, in a setting in which the government’s courts are never used. The analysis shows that the caste council works In a way thaitis totally different from a modern, European-style court. Courts work to separate guilty people from society, while the caste council reintegrates people who have misbehaved.
