Summary/Abstract: he main character of this article is Matylda Krzesińska - a Russian dancer of polish provenience and first, although ill-fated love of prince and later emperor, Nicolai II. Since 1890 she appeared on the stage of Maryjski Theatre in Petersburg, where she was recognised as prima ballerina assoluta - this title was acquired only by few in the history of ballet. In 1909 Krzesińska appeared at Les Ballets Russes in Paris, where she settled in 1920 and opened a school for ballet dancers. In early stages of her career she owed popularity to the romance with young crown successor, Nicolai, but in fact it was her fabulous dance, the legacy of her father Feliks Krzesiński, which made her one of icons in Russia’s history of culture. Krzesińska also had a huge influence on the nineteenth century ballet - she was the first Slavic dancer who mastered, long inaccessible for Russians, technical secrets of dance, known earlier only to the Italians. Matylda Krzesińska was a brilliant ballet dancer, famous in whole Europe, a person with very interesting and turbulent memoir. An additional interest was raised especially by her romance with crowned prince of nineteenth century’s greatest superpower, which became an object of study for historians and journalists.
