Summary/Abstract: Intensive cultural contacts and the increased mobility of people on a global level over the last few decades have influenced the formation and dispersion of the idea that globalization unfavorably and necessarily influences the survival of local cultural identities. This initiatives for the conservation of intangible cultural heritage can be viewed in the context of emphasizing the importance of recognizing and preserving differences in all spheres of culture. As music is one of the means of communication and identification among both individuals and communities on different levels, it is my intent to – within the framework of anthropological theory – view the aspects based on which music can be recognized as a kind of intangible cultural heritage.
