Polabian Slavs as unacknowledged motivation for certain hodonyms in Poznań

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to correct the erroneous etymologies of the names of certain streets in Poznań and to explain the motivation behind several more, hitherto unclear ones. All the discussed street names were bestowed after the war. Together, they form a thematic cluster, which could be described as “Polabian Slavs” – these are mainly hodonyms motivated by toponyms, derived from Slavonic (attested or reconstructed) names of towns and rivers in Germany, accepted in Polish scholarly discourse long before the war. Thematically, they correspond with another, a much less enigmatic group of street names, also represented in Poznań – the hodonyms created from the names of Slavic tribes, mostly Polabian ones (e.g. Dalemińska, Milczańska, Wenedów). Choosing this subject by the authorities was deliberate: the objective was to confirm the age-old Slavic character of the eastern areas of Germany, a country defeated in the war, and indirectly – to emphasize for propaganda purposes the Polish rights to the so-called Recovered Territories.
