Summary/Abstract: This article describes the support verb construction in Estonian – i.e. a construction consisting ofa semantically relatively empty support verb and an action nominal. Two types of support verb constructions are distinguished: in the first type the action nominal occupies the object position of the support verb, the actor (usually the agent) of the action denoted by the action nominal goes to the subject position of the support verb. The second type is semantically an impersonal construction: the action nominal occupies the subject position of the intransitive support verb. If an action nominal has a logical object, then in the both types of support verb constructions it can’t take the object position of the support verb and has to be expressed using some other means. The same applies to the actor of the second type of support verb constructions. The article describes some strategies of coding these roles in support verb constructions.
