Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the emergence and importance of money for the economy in Antiquity and especially in Ancient Rome. The author follows the connection be-tween the natural exchange and the money economy, as well as the emergence and develoment of the contract of sale (emptio-venditio) as the next, a higher de-gree of regulation of echange (permutation).
