Summary/Abstract: Still not widely read in the United States, John Hawkes confronts his readers with the difficult task of assessing nightmares and forbidden desires conjured up through stylistic finesse. His visions of high speed cars as agents of destruction and his passion for racehorses make for his most enduring literary fetish: the skillful horsewoman, an image of erotic loss and portent of incoming death. The study tackles the literary means employed by John Hawkes in order to refashion classical equestrian representations and thus to aestheticize the erotic conflict.
