Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the first and the last published book by Toni Morrison and the way race makes its presence in her writing. Morrison draws upon the social, political and economic forces that shape contemporary racism in the American society, thus investigating the meaning of self in a culture determined by skin colour. The development in race consciousness will be discussed as well as the question of what has changed during the span of 45 years.
