The Biographical Approach: Methodological Value and Perspectives

Summary/Abstract: In sociology, as in other social sciences, the field is at present characterized by а pluralism of theories and methods. As а result, life histories – at long last rediscovered – are being used in а wide variety of ways. But at the same time, because they are leading research to focus on the points of convergence and merging between man and social position, culture and praxis, sociostructural relationships and historical dynamics, this very diversity in the use of life histories may ultimately generate а unifying approach sufficiently large in scope to transcend the actual boundaries of sociology.
