Linguistic Feminisation in Senegal

Summary/Abstract: Lexical feminisation and feminisation of texts represents a relatively frequent subject of research in some Francophone countries. Yet, this is less so in African Francophone countries. This paper presents the level of lexical feminisation using the corpus of French texts available on the Internet, composed by the institutions and authorities of Senegal. In addition, the paper provides some data concerning the position of French in African countries, presents the methodology used in the research and the results gained that are analysed, commented, and quantified based on various procedures pointing to the linguistic visibility of women in these sorts of texts. By looking at the results, it is possible to offer an explanation for this socio-linguistic phenomenon, which is still largely disputed in France, only this time in a country dominated by a Muslim majority. Given the aforementioned, there should be considerable differences in relation to European and American Francophonie. Nevertheless, the author shows that lexical feminisation, though not completely systematic, is present in official texts released by Senegal authorities to a large extent.
