Summary/Abstract: This paper will present a short overview of the most important classifications of religious organizations – the beginnings in dealing with such issues will be showcased through works of Weber and Troeltsch, as well as later developments and amendments to basic concepts by various authors. Typologies set forth by Roy Wallis, Bryan Wilson, Gordon Melton and Christopher Partridge will be presented – positive characteristics, but also shortcomings of these typologies will be discussed, as well as possibilities and outreach of classifying religious concepts in general.
