Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the four basic elements (water, fire, earth and air), which Bachelard has thoroughly examined in his works, and through them the concept of image and specifically of poetical image is defined. The concept of poetical image is different from the concept of “symbol” and “metaphor”. Namely: the image arises from nothingness, no causality may be found in its appearance, it gives birth to our dreams and it is the actual “soul dawn”. Unlike the metaphor, it has an ontological meaning and in Bachelard the image density forms a specific meta-language, which is typical of the philosopher’s works.
