Birth – miserable as well as merry (On the subject of the vocabulary in a humanist obstetrical book)

Summary/Abstract: The anonymous translation of Zahrádka ruoženná [Rose garden; Olomouc 1558] was originally written in Latin by Eucharius Rösslin Jr. The main subject of this paper is the vocabulary that is related to the given subject. Specific are the expressions related to the anatomy of the female body, to the pregnancy and foetus, to the positions of the foetus, and to the description of the birth process, birth and puerperal attendants taking care of the newborn, health issues frequent in both the parturients and newborns, and utilized drugs. This vocabulary shows features of nascent terminology, i.e. it is unstable and ambiguous, and lexemes are often polysemantic. One of its salient features is the inclusion of quotation and adopted words. The translated version of Rösslinʼs work includes also lexemes expressing that the wise midwifeʼs work should be professed sensitively and with empathy.
