Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to discuss the morphological status of Sino-Japanese morphemes within Japanese. The analysis focuses on the way they can be merged with other units. Moreover, I discuss the traditional Japanese approach, pointing out differences between affixes and morphemes used for standard compounding. The problem turns out to be non-trivial if the units in question are approached from the point of view of polysystemism; linguistic categories, taken from Chinese (a language where the syntactic position plays the crucial role) to the system of Japanese, with an agglutinative inflection give rise to some interesting problem situated at the morphology-syntax interface of natural languages.
