Summary/Abstract: The article concerns Helke Misselwitz’s documentary film Winter adé (1988) and Volker Koepp’s documentary film series Wittstock Zyklus (1974-1997). These works have previously been analysed as examples of feminist documentary film-making, or as artistic manifestations of women’s everyday life and social inequalities in the GDR. This paper is an attempt to interpret these films in the context of the events of 1989 and to determine whether Misselwitz’s and Koepp’s works can be seen as documents of a “social turn” which had begun before the 1990s.
