Summary/Abstract: The article presents an analysis of various models of coping with recent German history as depicted in the novel. The author of the article draws attention to the differences between East German and West German historical policies after 1945 and the consequences of these policies for both German societies. She emphasises the important part literature plays in the process of creating a collective memory of an uncomfortable, and often traumatic, past.
