Summary/Abstract: After introducing the terms “linguistic identity” and “language identity” and tackling some of the issues related to social networks, the paper investigates the principal characteristics of the written language of Southern Serbia as used in internet communication, primarily on Facebook, the largest social network and a virtual multicultural environment. In the corpus collected from accounts of people from Pirot, Babušnica, Surdulica and Niš, we have extracted and analyzed linguistic elements charactersitic of the PrizrenTimok dialect, as well as those parts of language which do not belong to this dialect, but reflect the influence of English on Serbian, the influence of the medium on the language used and the influence of other variants of Serbian on the sourthern one. All the linguistic elements were counted and expressed as percentages in order to show the aspects of language which characterize the online linguistic identity of the south/southeast of Serbia. This paper also aims to check whether the fact that virtual networks have become a part of the global multicultural village forces the Southerners to renounce their regional linguistic specificities.
