Summary/Abstract: On the basis of sources preserved in archives of Belarus, Lithuania and Poland, the author seeks to explain in what way the eighteenth-century city of Vitsyebsk got interested in its history which led to the emergence of a number of local texts of historical nature. Since the main stimulus to awaken interest in historical sources and history was the struggle for power, the article presents the determinant factors and course of conflicts over the office of mayor in 1729–1730 and 1748–1750. Special attention was paid to the circumstances of compilation, edition and copying of The Book of Vitsyebsk Privileges and Pantsyrn’ and Averka’s Chronicle closely related to it.
