Summary/Abstract: Summary This paper is a product of the ‘oral histories’ research of the first generation of Serbian immigrants to Canada, carried out in Toronto, in July 2008. The goal of this research was to collect information about Serbian Diaspora in Canada by obtaining answers to a set of questions concerning their immigrant experience with the particular emphasis on the cultural differences. Milton Bennet’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS), consisting of six stages of development (denial, de-fence/reversal, minimization, acceptance, adaptation and integration) will be applied to the interviews previously mentioned in order to explain various reactions to cultural differences, including strategies for helping people to adjust to the new surrounding.
