Summary/Abstract: This essay focuses on the art of anguish progression in the poem The Conscience of Victor Hugo, a poem that has Cain at its center, surprised after the fratricide was committed. The remorses by which the character is invaded are more and more intense, he trying to flee or hide from the repressive and penetrating eye of the divinity (reflex of his guilty conscience) in various locations or constructions, but without success.
