Summary/Abstract: The folktale is a schematic initiatic narrative which fulfills a series of roles in the traditional society because it mirrors aspects, beliefs and ideas of the creative community. The reflection of popular art in life is present in many compartments, kinship being no exception. This paper is concerned with showing some family and social connections shadowing kinship, as well as with exploring the under-layers of archaic beliefs regarding matriarchy and patriarchal organization, both of them observed in the Romanian folktale. The linguistic features through which kinship is expressed in folktale encode, in a symbolic key, their conceptualization, updating the mother image as a central figure of the social life on one hand, and updating the father figure as a central authority subscribed to initiatic patterns and an interdiction complex, so specific to a patriarhal society, on the other hand.
