Summary/Abstract: As everywhere in the world, the birth of a new child is a reason of joy for the people in the village Vidra. A new child brings feelings of great fulfilment and satisfaction. As in all important life events, at the birth of a child, the inhabitants of Vidra put their faith in God, the one governing their entire world and the leader of their lives. The statute of the pregnant woman and all that follows after birth is strongly connected to ancient customs and rituals, coming from an old harmonious world, where God, together with the Saints, watched over the natural world, where the peasant was in peace with all given aspects of life. Even if the ceremonials and the rite of birth is less highlighted than the wedding and the funeral, the conception and the birth of a child are considered a major event due to the existent multitude of beliefs and practices, some of them still maintained nowadays in Vidra, even if emptied of their original significance.
