Summary/Abstract: Since the second half of the 20th century, the South China Sea has become the most contested stretch of water in the world, respectively one of the most tense areas of the globe. All riparian states have expressed territorial demands on the sea, and the neutral presence of the United States has not fostered regional cohesion. This circumstance was determined by the strategic role that the South China Sea plays in the power system in Southeast Asia. As a consequence, this article delves into the economic importance of the sea, highlighting the true geopolitical stakes: the Sino-American competition.
