Summary/Abstract: The article deals with enviromental and geopolitical factors that have contributed to the becoming of neoclassical economics a globally dominating theory with sustained positions although during the last decades it has been subjected to strong criticism. A conclusion is made that the assertion of the dominance of neoclassical economics has been supported by the geopolitical situation after World War II as well as by concepts, ideology and interests currently prevailing in the countries with democratic political systems and market economy. At the beginning of the XXI century there was a conscious need for changes in the dominance in economic theory. At present the factors that most strongly oppose those changes are interests in the academic world.
