Summary/Abstract: The article is directed against the rationalistic interpretation of the Great Commandment You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Mt. 22,39), for, according to the teaching of Thomas Aquinas, only through contingent particular attachments to concrete human individuals are people able to experience an interdependence with all other beings. Therefore, the false rationalistic idea of universality, which forces people to give up their contingent particular attachments, is to be abandoned.
