Summary/Abstract: The archive functions as a writer’s testament and as a depository of his or her biographical legend. Marzec examines two archival collections, held at different institutions, relating to the poet Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna. She asks how they deal with the famous controversy about the collection Szeptem, which is characteristic of the transformations of poetic diction. The archive as a writer’s testament can be seen in terms of the poet’s self-representation – how she presents her work and her involvement in literary circles. The archive as a depository of a biographical legend has a narrower aim, namely to create or maintain the biographical legend. Each form of archival activity, Marzec argues, has paradoxes and limitations, and neither is culturally or socially neutral.
